These days we all of us use some sort of GPS to do surveys – whether it is grand models that only the government officials can afford of small handheld units for the mere mortals! Since Model Maker now has the ability to “rectify” project elevations to a much higher standard of accuracy by using SRTM data, isn’t it time to ask for a routine in Model Maker to go live with a GPS on a laptop? We know that the horizontal accuracy is not too bad for preliminary work, but that the vertical accuracy is the big problem.
I think it would be very beneficial to go live, because now, before even going to a project, I can have a nice, accurately scaled Google image (with quite accurate contour lines) before even leaving my office. If I can go live with a GPS of some sort, I can go to a totally unfamiliar terrain, position myself rather accurately and survey what I want to survey. What a pleasure!
Everyone that has worked in Africa north of the Limpopo will appreciate that more you can tell!
